Guo emphasizes that adolescence is a crucial period for the development of hormone signaling pathways, and changes in stress hormone signaling and cortisol during this time can have lasting impacts on cardiometabolic health.
Cardiometabolic health concerns include issues like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity—all contributing factors to an elevated risk of heart disease. Guo suggests that understanding the effects of stress in childhood is vital for preventing or managing these risk factors in young adults.
The study, published in the journal of the American Heart Association, analyzed data from the Southern California Children's Health Study, a long-term project spanning over 30 years and involving more than 12,000 children. The researchers focused on 276 participants, examining perceived stress levels during adolescence and early adulthood.
Surprisingly, the study found that consistently high stress from age 13 to young adulthood affects cardiovascular health in later years. Guo notes that their results underline the importance of stress management from adolescence, highlighting it as a health-protective behavior.
While more research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms and when these long-term impacts begin, Guo emphasizes the importance of taking teenage stress seriously. The findings suggest that those with decreasing stress patterns show better heart health than those with consistently high stress levels.
