Young Dancer Faces Eczema Struggle, Develops Allergy to Her Own Tears and Sweat
In a heart-wrenching situation, an 11-year-old dancer named Summah Williams has found herself facing a painful skin condition that has made her allergic to her own tears and sweat. This condition has not only brought excruciating pain but has also hindered her passion for dancing.
Summah's ordeal began at the end of 2022 when her skin dried out, developed cracks, and became red and inflamed, all beneath a layer of shedding skin. Initially, her mother, Karyn Zimny, thought it was just a bad sunburn. However, her concern grew as she noticed Summah shivering in the heat and constantly itching her skin at night.
Upon hospitalization, Summah was diagnosed with eczema and found to have developed an unusual allergy to her own tears and sweat. Karyn Zimny expressed the heartbreak of witnessing her daughter's struggle, especially considering Summah's deep love for dancing. The skin condition has led to painful facial flares, even as Summah undergoes a new injection treatment called Dupixent.
Australia, where Summah resides, has one of the highest incidences of eczema among children globally. The intense summer heat in the region is exacerbating the risk for many children. MooGoo, an Australian skincare brand, reports a surge in demand for their Irritable Skin Balm eczema cream, with over 70% sales growth since the previous year.
The Eczema Association of Australia reveals that up to 30% of children and 10% of adults are affected by eczema to varying degrees. Weather conditions, including extreme heat, are often cited as significant triggers for flare-ups. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis, emphasizing the importance of managing symptoms for those living with these conditions.
Experts advise the following to help treat skin irritation and eczema:
avoiding foaming agents, perfumes, harsh soaps, and preservatives when using skincare products.
After taking a bath, moisturize your skin and apply products without fragrance right away.
Checking washing detergent for sulphates and other skin irritants.
Reducing the heat of showers and baths to prevent stripping natural oils from the skin.
Reducing or avoiding sugar and yeast while incorporating oily fish, vitamin A and E rich foods, and omega-3 rich foods into the diet.
Using a probiotic that contains the lactobacillus rhamnosus strain.
Keeping a food diary to identify potential triggers for flare-ups.
Consulting with a healthcare professional to identify environmental, dietary, or other allergens contributing to skin problems.
